Year 5 pedestrian training goes down a storm in Chelmsford

Each year the Safer Essex Roads Partnership’s (SERP) road safety team provides training to Year 5 students about making independent journeys.

The training features an interactive classroom session followed by an outside session which both explore pedestrian, cycling and passenger safety.

Since Easter this year, nearly 2,000 students have received the training and last week, on 2 July, the team visited Parkwood primary school in Chelmsford.

Lauren Williams, teacher at Parkwood, said: “I want to thank the road safety team for coming today. The children really enjoyed working with you and I think they have gone home excited to share what they’ve learnt. It was crucial they had some training at this time as so many are starting to walk home. We would definitely like to work with you again next year.”

Adele Luchmun, teacher at Parkwood, said: “We thought both mornings were excellent and really got the children thinking. We had some thoughtful road safety discussions after the presentations which will be invaluable when they start walking to and from school without parents.”

Donna Bond, road safety technician, said: “The year five pupils at Parkwood were outstanding, one of several primary schools the team have visited over the past few weeks.
