SERP celebrates Road Safety Ambassadors

The Safer Essex Roads Partnership (SERP) gives thanks to the growing number of Road Safety Ambassadors in Schools in Essex and encourages others to join the scheme as part of Global Road Safety Week.

Statistics show that young drivers/riders have the highest collision rates of all road users in Essex, Southend-on-Sea and Thurrock.

To help combat this, the Safer Essex Roads Partnership (SERP) encourages schools and colleges to appoint Road Safety Ambassadors to promote road safety to their peers.

SERP asks the Ambassadors, who volunteer for the role, to support its year-round programme of activities including: ‘Surround a Town’ days; the #My Small Change campaign; activity to combat speeding, mobile phone use and drink and drug driving; Project EDWARD and all activity to support the Partnership’s aspiration of Vision Zero.

Road Safety Officer and SERP lead for the initiative, Donna Bond, said: “We now have 300 Road Safety Ambassadors across schools in Essex which is fantastic and really shows the passion the students have for our Vision Zero ambition and saving lives on our roads.

“As with many school activities, the Ambassadors have struggled to support road safety during the pandemic, but we are hopeful that their important work can continue as we return to normal.

Nicola Foster, Chairman for SERP, added: “We want to take this opportunity to thank you all for being interested and involved in road safety. You will have different reasons for being involved and different ideas about how to encourage your friends, peer group and fellow pupils to think about their safety on the roads… Whilst we will give you as much help as we can, we want to learn from you and share the best ideas.
