Businesses encouraged to sign the Essex Vision Zero pledge

Businesses are being urged to sign the Essex Vision Zero Pledge, after figures showed that over 40% of road crashes occur when people are commuting or driving for work.

Data released by the Safer Essex Roads Partnership revealed that between 2018 and 2022, 26% of collisions resulting in death or injury occurred while people were travelling for work, and 17% occurred while people were commuting.

Vision Zero is the ambition to eliminate deaths and serious injuries on Essex roads by 2040. 

The partnership is calling for companies across the county to sign the Essex Vision Zero Pledge, launched in May, which is giving all road users an opportunity to commit to this important aspiration.

While road deaths and injuries have reduced in the county in recent years, 47 people were killed and 736 people were seriously injured in Essex in 2021. 

Will Cubbin, Manager of the Safer Essex Roads Partnership, said: “Everybody has a responsibility to use the roads safely, however they choose to get around, and many people have already signed our Vision Zero pledge.

“Companies who are based in and around our county, who rely heavily on using the Essex road network to carry out their business, have a particular responsibility to keep their drivers, employees and other road users safe.

“Whether businesses have a large fleet or employ just a few people who commute on our roads to get to their workplace, we urge them to sign the pledge to demonstrate their commitment to reducing road harm.”
