Accessibility
We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website. For example, that means you should be able to:
- change colours, contrast levels and fonts
- zoom in up to 300% without the text spilling off the screen
- navigate most of the website using just a keyboard
- navigate most of the website using speech recognition software
- listen to most of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver)
We also aim to make the website text as simple as possible to understand. To help us do this, we provide content guidelines for everyone adding information to the site.
AbilityNet has advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability, including making changes to see and use your display easier and getting your device to talk to you.
Many web browsers, such as Chrome, Safari, and Internet Explorer, can also help translate our website into your preferred language by making changes to their settings.
How accessible this website is
We know some parts of this website are not fully accessible, for example some:
- images may not make sense on their own
- archived news articles, PDF and Word documents may not always be fully accessible to screen reader software
- some videos are without captions or audio description

Technical information about this website’s accessibility
Safer Essex Roads Partnership is committed to making its website accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.
Compliance status
This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.1 AA standard, due to the non-compliances listed below.
Non-accessible content
The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons.
Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations
Videos
- Although
our own videos have closed captions and an audio description where appropriate,
videos which belong to third parties do not always have these. If you
experience any problem accessing a video, you can contact us for a
transcription of the video. Our plan is to ensure all third party videos have
closed captions and an audio description where appropriate by the 1st
August 2021
Links to external sites and resources
- External sites and resources which are linked from our site may not always comply with the same accessibility standards. Although these are outside our responsibility, we will continue to work with partners to encourage them to adopt our standard
Archive news articles
- News articles prior to September 2021 may not all be fully accessible. If you have any trouble accessing an archived news article, please contact us. Our plan is to continue to remove old news archives on an on-going basis,
Content that’s not within the scope of the accessibility regulations
PDFs and other documents
Although some older PDFs are inaccessible and do not meet accessibility standards, we are working towards making as many PDF’s meet WCAG 2.1 AA accessibility standards as possible.
The accessibility regulations do not require us to fix PDFs or other documents published before 23 September 2018 if they’re not essential to providing our services.
We are prioritising making PDFs accessible that:
- contain current information
- are most frequently downloaded
Our plan is to ensure that all essential PDFs and other documents meet accessibility regulations by 1st August 2021.
Live video
We do not currently use live video streams. Should we use these in the future, we do not plan to add captions because live video is exempt from meeting the accessibility regulations.
What we’re doing to improve accessibility
Our own team continue to monitor accessibility using automated and manual checks using the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1.
